Potometer Apparatus
Used to demonstrate transpiration in small plant shoots. The apparatus is submerged in water and the plant specimen is placed in the tube; as transpiration occurs, the air bubble in the capillary tube moves along the scale. A syringe is used to reset the bubble to zero.
This design has only one glass component, the capillary tube, mounted on a strong backing plate, which minimises the risk of breakages compared to older all-glass potometer designs. It’s a practical option for repeated classroom use.
The apparatus can also be adapted to measure humidity by connecting a porous pot.
